Riding Toward Safety: Spotlight on Motorcycle and Bicycle Awareness this May

May is a time to celebrate the freedom of the open road and a reminder of the shared responsibility we all have in keeping it safe. As the weather warms and more motorcycles and bicycles return to our streets and trails, it’s the perfect time to recognize two important national observances: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and National Bicycle Safety Month

At Stokes Creative Group, Inc., we believe that safety and storytelling go hand in hand. Whether we’re supporting transportation agencies with public outreach or documenting infrastructure improvements, our mission is to promote safer, smarter travel for all users, from two wheels to four.

Why Awareness Matters

Each year, thousands of crashes involving motorcycles and bicycles occur on U.S. roads, many of which are preventable. These incidents are often the result of limited visibility, distracted driving, or a lack of infrastructure that safely supports all modes of travel. Raising awareness is a key first step in changing that.

For Drivers: Share the Road

  • Stay alert and double-check blind spots for motorcycles and cyclists
  • Give motorcycles the full lane width; never attempt to share a lane
  • Allow at least three feet of space when passing bicycles
  • Avoid distractions and always keep your focus on the road

For Riders: Be Seen and Be Safe

  • Always wear proper safety gear, including helmets and high-visibility clothing
  • Use bike lanes where available and obey all traffic signs and signals
  • Use lights and reflectors, especially at night or in low-visibility conditions
  • Stay predictable by signaling turns and avoiding sudden maneuvers

Our Role in Safer Streets

As part of the transportation and infrastructure community, Stokes supports agencies and stakeholders in making safety a priority. From creative campaigns that promote active transportation to construction communication strategies that inform and protect the public, we are proud to be part of the journey toward safer roads for everyone.

This month and every month, let’s commit to building a culture of respect and awareness across all modes of travel. Whether you’re riding a motorcycle, biking to work, or driving to your destination, we all share the road. Let’s make it a safer place together.

Stay safe, stay seen, and enjoy the ride.
